The Garden Inspector: expert advice in pictures

Garden Inspector Helen Yemm critiques the long border in Diane Dent's garden in Gloucestershire. The delphiniums need better support and overall the border could do with more height, was Helen's verdict.

More Telegraph readers' pictures of autumn colour in Britain

Lenovo to upgrade ThinkPad Tablet to Android 4.0

Lenovo plans to upgrade its popular ThinkPad Tablet to the latest version of the Android 4.0 operating system in the second quarter this year, the company said Monday.
The ThinkPad Tablet was launched in July last year as a business tablet. The tablet retails starting at $479 and runs on Android 3.1, which is code-named Honeycomb.
Lenovo in the past has said that upgrades to Android 4.0 would be delivered over the air to its ThinkPad and IdeaPad tablets, but had not provided specific guidance on dates.
The upgrade will provide users access to the latest version of Android 4.0, which provides user interface, connectivity, application and multimedia improvements. The OS, which is designed for both smartphones and tablets, also improves encryption layers for data and e-mail security, which could appeal to enterprise users. The new OS also provides administrators more stronger remote control over tablets.
However, the Android 4.0 upgrade may not enable some hardware-specific features such as Android Beam, which uses NFC (near-field communications) technology to share Web content, maps and directions between tablets by simply tapping. The ThinkPad Tablet does not have NFC features yet.
But the upgrades should provide Lenovo a leg-up over other competition from Cisco, which sells the enterprise-focused Cius tablet with Android. Cisco did not immediately respond to requests for comment on when it would upgrade the Cius.
Upgrades to Android 4.0, which is code-named Ice Cream Sandwich, are already trickling out for a few tablets. Asus is already delivering upgrades over-the-air to Asus' Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablets, but some users are experiencing install problems.
The ThinkPad Tablet has a 10.1-inch screen, weighs 1.65 pounds (0.75 kilograms) and provides eight hours of battery life.

Acer sues former CEO Lanci for breach of contract

Acer has sued its former CEO and President Gianfranco Lanci in Italian courts for allegedly violating a non-compete clause, the company said Tuesday.
Lanci was ousted as Acer's CEO in March 2011 after disagreements with the company's board on product strategy and in January joined Lenovo as a consultant to strengthen European operations.
Acer said in a statement that he likely breached a non-compete clause that was in his contract with the company when he left last year.
Lanci became Acer's CEO in 2008, and the company overtook Dell as the world's second-largest computer vendor during the third quarter of 2009, mainly benefiting from netbooks. However Acer's fortunes sunk as netbook shipments dropped and tablet shipments gained momentum. Analysts said Lanci's resignation reflected a difference of opinion in how aggressively Acer should shift its focus from consumer PCs and pursue mobile devices.
Acer in the past has thwarted Lenovo's expansion plans in Europe. Acer's acquisition of Gateway in 2007 derailed Lenovo's plans to acquire European PC vendor Packard Bell, which was ultimately acquired by Acer.
Lenovo was the fifth-largest PC vendor in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) in the fourth quarter last year, while Acer was the second largest, according to IDC. But on a worldwide basis, Lenovo is the second-largest PC vendor, while Acer is the third largest.
Lenovo hopes Lanci's past experience will help expand shipments of products, especially in Western Europe. PC shipments in EMEA fell by 6.5 percent in the fourth quarter last year, according to IDC.
Lenovo did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Acer's suit against Lanci.

Buyers lining up for Raspberry Pi's $25 PC

Raspberry Pi Foundation's $25 PC will become available by the end of this month, and buyers hope it could fill in as a low-power desktop, while being an alternative to the more expensive open-source hardware.
The Raspberry Pi PC is an uncased motherboard the size of a credit card that is capable of running basic word processing and Internet applications. The computer has basic input, display and networking ports, and can run Linux flavors including Fedora, Debian and ArchLinux.
Technology enthusiasts have been lining up since the device was announced last May. Some want the PC as an inexpensive way to replace home-theater PCs or low-power Windows desktops for basic Internet and productivity applications. Some also hope to contribute to the goal of nonprofit Raspberry Pi Foundation to promote programming among students.
The PC has a single-core ARM CPU running at 700MHz, up to 256MB of RAM and a graphics engine that is capable of playing high-definition video. The device can be powered by batteries or a microUSB port, and peripherals can be attached through a USB port. For $35, the PC will include features like an Ethernet port. However, the hardware pales in comparison to more expensive phones, tablets and PCs, which run more dynamic and demanding applications.
The device can run a broad range of applications, from robotics to aerospace to media streaming, said Eben Upton, executive director of Raspberry Pi Foundation. "I'm sure people are going to come up with some completely crazy stuff," Upton said.
Beyond the price, some buyers are attracted to Pi as a low-power media streaming device. The Pi's powerful graphics processor is capable of handling Blu-ray video, and can be connected to a high-definition TV through an HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) port.
"I plan on using the device as a home-theater PC to replace my older Atom nettop. I also plan on using another unit as a home file-web server. I never have to worry about powering the system down to conserve energy," said Brian Giguere, a Web developer and designer in Massachusetts.
Christian Wacker, a student at Concordia University in Nebraska, wants the Pi to be an affordable home-theater PC replacement.
"This is much, much cheaper than Google TV, and also much more power efficient than a full home-theater PC," Wacker said, adding that simple tasks like file sharing, network management, checking email and basic Internet usage would also be possible.
But the device is not a true PC replacement, Wacker said. The Pi's capabilities are also limited by the inability to run WINE, an emulator that allows Linux users to run Windows programs.

New Sony CEO: Hot gadgets aren't enough anymore

IDG News Service - Sony's new CEO says the company needs to move on from its hardware roots.
From its inception, the company has defined itself through its brightly named gadget lines -- Walkman, Vaio, Cyber-shot, PlayStation -- but incoming CEO Kazuo Hirai says Sony must now focus more on the software and platforms they access. Hirai, who will officially lead the company from April, spoke to reporters Thursday at Sony headquarters in central Tokyo.
"Everybody talks about 'Sony-like, Sony-esque' products, which is fine, and that's very important, but more important than that is for me to evolve the company," he said. "We can turn this company, that traditionally was a purveyor of hardware, into something bigger than that."
Hirai, who first joined Sony in 1984, said physical products are just one part of the user's experience, which is equally dependent on software, content and network connectivity. He said he wants to model the company after its successful PlayStation gaming business, which he helped turn around, where "hardware drives software, and software drives hardware, and it's all tied in by the network."
The executive will take over from current CEO Howard Stringer as the company faces nearly $3 billion in losses in the current fiscal year, with its core consumer product division deeply in the red due in large part to its struggling TV business. Hirai has repeatedly said he will not abandon televisions, but has slashed sales targets and moved to outsource production of key components in an effort to turn the business around in the next two years.
Sony is looking to leverage its large in-house video game, movie and music holdings through efforts like its Sony Entertainment Network and PlayStation Certified program, which aim to make the content available on its myriad of devices. The company's entertainment holdings are a rare asset among electronics companies, though rivals like Apple and Amazon long ago negotiated to sell impressive libraries of their own.
Despite the new focus, he said the company would continue to put effort into compelling new gadgetry, and has some potential hit products in the works.
"We have stuff in the pipeline," he said. "But I'm not going to share."

HP offers dedicated tech support for Elite PCs

IDG News Service - Hewlett-Packard has expanded technology support options for its premium Elite PC customers, who will now be able to select a single tech support person to deal with over the life of a PC, the company said on Wednesday.
Under the new support plan, customers can get a single number and single point of contact for quick PC support. Business customers can schedule support calls at the time of their choice.
Other options include prioritized support and PC set-up options. The support plans extend to remote and cloud-based PC support.
This is an interesting step ahead for HP, which is trying to win back the confidence of its PC customers after a tough 2011. HP last year decided to sell or spin off its PC division, only to change course and retain it.
Tech support comes standard with every purchase of an Elite PC and is also available for existing Elite PC users. Elite laptops, desktops and workstations are generally targeted at business users and are generally priced higher than consumer laptops. The company also sells business PCs such as Folio and ProBook laptops, but the support options are not available for those laptops.
The company also said it would roll out additional support options in the coming months.

Microsoft details Windows 8 for ARM devices

IDG News Service - Microsoft has released technical design details about the new version of Windows for devices that use ARM chips, outlining in a lengthy blog post different ways in which this OS, called WOA and still in the works, will be alike and different from existing versions of Windows.
WOA (Windows on ARM) will be based on the Windows 8 code base, itself still in development, and will replicate some familiar Windows design features, such as having a desktop interface component. In other ways, WOA will be uniquely crafted, such as requiring that devices running it use a system-on-a-chip design.
"WOA enables creativity in PC design that, in combination with newly architected features of the OS, will bring to customers new no-compromise experiences," wrote the post's author Steven Sinofsky, president of Windows and Windows Live Division.
"We created WOA to enable a new class of PC with unique capabilities and form factors, supported by a new set of partners that expand the ecosystem of which Windows is part," he wrote.
Microsoft expects WOA PCs, which will be based on hardware platforms from ARM licensees Nvidia, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments, to start shipping at the same time as Windows 8 PCs for the x86/64 processors from Intel and Advanced Micro Devices.
The Nvidia, Qualcomm and TI platforms will share what Sinofsky calls a "common" WOA foundation, running the same Windows OS binaries. Already, PC makers are involved with WOA to build devices like tablets as well as other devices that are lightweight, thin and require long battery life.
A big takeaway from Sinofsky's post is that Microsoft appears to be locking down the hardware specs for WOA devices, which has positive and negative implications, said IDC analyst Al Gillen.
The negative is that this reduces device makers' ability to differentiate their devices. "If [a device maker] wants to make a very unique Windows 8 ARM device, they can't necessarily add in new inputs and sensors that aren't supported by the OS," he said. "They can't go in and write extensions to the OS to make things happen unless they do it at the application level."
The positive is that this creates a larger ecosystem of devices that run the same version of the operating system, and applications have better portability, which ultimately outweighs the negative, he said.
"You have more standardization in the Windows market, which in turn creates a larger ecosystem, a larger, more addressable device market for software makers, and that's what Microsoft needs: a strong software ecosystem," Gillen said.
Like Windows 8 PCs for x86/64, WOA devices will be able to run Metro-style applications from the Windows Store created using the WinRT APIs (application programming interfaces). However, WOA PCs will not run, emulate or port existing x86/64 desktop applications.

Lenovo closes in on top PC vendor spot

IDG News Service - China's Lenovo, already a top brand in its home country, is focused on becoming a household name in major foreign markets as the company faces the prospect of becoming the world's largest PC vendor for the first time in its history.
Chances are the Chinese company could take the title some time in 2012 after achieving the highest growth rate among the top five companies for the last two years. Now ranked as the second largest, Lenovo's market share is just two percentage points below Hewlett-Packard's 16%, according to research firm IDC.
Lenovo's rise coincides with the world's largest PC market moving from the U.S. to China starting last year. Back in 1997, Lenovo for the first time became China's top PC vendor, where it has since gone on to claim a 35.3% market share on its home turf, a major factor in driving the company's growth, according to analysts.
Now fifteen years later, the Chinese PC maker wants to popularize the company's consumer brand in markets including the U.S., where Lenovo's sales still lag far behind those of its top competitors.
"We want to be the first big consumer brand to come out of China, which is a big challenge," said Lenovo's chief marketing officer David Roman in an interview. "I think within the next few years, we will become a very well-known brand in the personal electronics space."
Last year, Lenovo launched its first ever global marketing campaign, targeting consumers in North America, Japan, Germany, Russia, Japan and the U.K. This led the company to push ads with its new tagline, "For those who do," and even place its products in the hit movie "Transformers: Dark of the Moon."
The campaign's result has helped double brand awareness among customers aged 18 to 34, according to company surveys, Roman said. "In the U.S., from March 2011 to January 2012, we saw an increase of 204% in purchase consideration for Lenovo computers," he said.
"More and more will depend on the consumer space, which is where the technology is going," Roman added. "This has been a crucial priority for us."
It also marks an uphill battle for the Chinese company as it faces off with established consumer brands. Unlike its standing in the world market, Lenovo is the sixth largest PC vendor in the U.S., with a market share of 7.3%, according to IDC.
But the Chinese PC maker has managed to grow its business amidst other challenges affecting the market. In the last two years, Apple's iPad cut into the sales of traditional PC desktops and notebooks. "For every ten PCs sold, three to four of them will be iPads," said Michael Kauh, an analyst with research firm Canalys. Weak economic conditions have further dampened sales, bringing negative year-over-year growth to PC vendors HP and Acer in 2011.

Apple's 'new iPad' gets high-res screen, LTE

Computerworld - Apple today unveiled the next-generation iPad, which features a higher-resolution display, a new processor with improved graphics performance, and support for faster LTE mobile data networks.
Much of what Apple executives unveiled had been heavily speculated on by bloggers and media outlets in the weeks leading up to today's launch event in San Francisco.
"But it's not Apple's job to surprise me, it's Apple's job to satisfy me," said Ezra Gottheil, an analyst with Technology Business Research.
And it did so, Gottheil continued.
"They've done a pretty good job here," he said. "It's a nice package, they're maintained the price, they're updating the software. It's sweet, and I'm sure they'll convince more people to go with a tablet."
That was the line that Apple CEO Tim Cook used when he called the company's tablet, "The poster child for the post-PC world" and again hammered home the theme that tablets are the future of computing, and that the iPad continues to lead all rivals.
"Everyone's been wondering who will come out with a tablet that is better than the iPad 2," said Cook. "Well, stop wondering. We are. We are redefining the category."
This was the first iPad introduction without former CEO Steve Jobs, who died last October.
The new iPad -- Apple called it exactly that, foregoing the "iPad 3" and "iPad HD" names pundits had put forward -- boasts a much sharper screen, relies on an Apple-designed A5X processor that offers twice the graphics punch, and supports the LTE networks for faster Internet connection speeds, said Philip Schiller, Apple's head of marketing, who held the stage through much of the introduction.
But it's neither cheaper or more expensive: Apple has retained the prices of 2011's iPad 2. The Wi-Fi versions start at $499 for a 16GB model and climb to $699 for a 64GB configuration, while the 3G/4G-capable iPads are priced from $629 to $829. The 3G/4G models will be available for both AT&T and Verizon in the U.S., which base their networks on competing cellular technologies.
The iPad will ship March 16 in the U.S., Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and the U.K. Other markets are expected to follow, although Apple did not disclose a timeline or list.
Apple will begin to take pre-orders for the iPad today at its online store.
The new tablet is slightly heavier -- about two ounces heavier -- and slightly thicker than the iPad 2. Like that model, it comes in both black and white configurations.

Source: Apple earnings reports.
As expected, the new iPad boasts a higher-resolution 2,048-by-1,536-pixel display, which provides four times the number of pixels as the 1024-by-768 resolution of the iPad and iPad 2. Schiller called it a "Retina" display, the label Apple uses for its iPhone screens.
"This is the best mobile display that has ever shipped," claimed Schiller.
Gottheil called out the higher-resolution screen as the biggest improvement. "This is going to be extremely important to people, especially those who use the iPad as an e-reader," he said. One market where that will be a big win for the iPad, he added, is education, where Apple recently made a push into the digital textbook space.
Short Take: Apple's 'New iPad' has retina display, 4G LTE
The new A5X processor -- a dual-core chip similar to the A5 that powers the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S -- includes an amped up graphics component Apple touted as a "powerhouse." The A5X delivers double the graphics performance of its predecessor, said Schiller.
Like Gottheil, Patrick Moorhead, principal analyst with Moor Insights and Strategy, was impressed with the new tablet's higher-resolution screen and improved graphics performance. "They're essentially agreeing with other companies that graphics are where it's at," said Moorhead. "Games, photos and video ... those are the things they're hitting on here, and those are all areas of great interest to the consumer."
Apple also confirmed another long-running rumor, that the new tablet will support the much faster LTE cellular data networks that have been rolled out in the U.S. by Verizon and AT&T.
Verizon has the clear LTE lead in the U.S.: Last month the carrier brought its total LTE markets to 195. AT&T, on the other hand, has deployed LTE in only 26 cities.
Other additions to the tablet included an improved 5-megapixel camera borrowed from the iPhone, and a Siri-like dictation mode that transforms speech into text.
The lack of a true Siri was the big disappointment today, said Gottheil, who like others had hoped to see the assistant come to the iPad.
"I think that the iPhone 4S is enough beta for them," said Gottheil, referring to the pre-release status of Siri on Apple's smartphone. "When it's ready for prime time, and I don't think it is now, it will appear on the iPad, probably as an update to iOS."
Last year's iPad 2 will live on, said Apple as it stole a play out of its iPhone manual: A 16GB Wi-Fi iPad 2 will sell for $399, a $100 discount, while a 16GB 3G model will be priced at $529.
Is that enough to add significant revenue to Apple's tablet bottom line? Gottheil didn't think so.
"I suspect that [the $100] will be enough of a discount for the education market," he said. "It will bring in more customers, but if the iPhone is any indication, it will help revenue only slightly."
Cook also announced the launch of iOS 5.1, an upgrade to the mobile operating system that powers the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. iOS 5.1 hit Apple's download servers today.
Among the other announcements today, Apple launched a revamped AppleTV that sports a dramatically revised user interface, as well as support for streaming high-definition movies, and said it will offer a Japanese-language version of Siri, the voice-activated assistant on the iPhone 4S, in the next few weeks. Japanese is the first language added to Siri since the service launched last year for English, French and German speakers.
But the lack a new name for the tablet -- again, Apple simply referred to it as "the new iPad" during the launch event and later, on its website -- took Gottheil by surprise.
"I was waiting for the 'iPad HD,' but it seems there will be just one name now for the flagship product," he said. "And after a while, numbers do get old."

Apple is biggest buyer of semiconductors, Gartner says

IDG News Service - Apple became the biggest buyer of semiconductors last year, ahead of Samsung Electronics and Hewlett-Packard, Gartner said on Tuesday.
Apple's increased semiconductor spending is the result of a number of factors. The company sold more smartphones, and its tablet business was also highly successful in 2011, according to Gartner. The success of the MacBook Air also increased Apple's semiconductor demand, it said.
Apple spent a total of $17.3 billion on semiconductors during 2011, compared to $12.8 billion during 2010, according to Gartner's estimates.
In general, smartphones, tablets and solid-state drives were the major spending drivers in 2011, according to Gartner.
Samsung remained the second-largest semiconductor purchaser, thanks to its improving fortunes in the smartphone sector. The company's semiconductor spending grew by 9.2% to $16.7 billion.
With semiconductor products such as memory priced as commodities, PC and phone vendors' semiconductor spending is related to sales of their finished products.

The shaky PC market pushed HP's semiconductor spending down. HP was still the largest PC maker in the fourth quarter of 2011, but shipments declined 16.2% year-over-year, Gartner recently said. HP spent a total of $16.6 billion on semiconductors during 2011, compared to $17.6 billion during the 2010.
Nokia's semiconductor spending, on the other hand, dropped over 20% to around $9 billion, making it the fifth-largest chip buyer, behind Dell but ahead of Sony (excluding Sony-Ericsson) and Toshiba.
In eighth place was Lenovo, which saw the strongest growth among the top five PC vendors during the fourth quarter, as its shipments grew 23%. It also increased its semiconductor spend by 23.7% to $7.5 billion, Gartner estimated.
The top ten semiconductor buyers spent $105.6 billion, or 35% of semiconductor vendors' worldwide chip revenue, according to Gartner.

Windows XP: No IE9 for you

Computerworld - Microsoft's new browser, Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), will not run on Windows XP, now or when the software eventually ships, the company confirmed Tuesday.
The move makes Microsoft the first major browser developer to drop support for XP, the world's most popular operating system, in a future release.
Although Microsoft excluded Windows XP from the list for the IE9 developer preview, it sidestepped the question about which versions of Windows the final browser would support. In an IE9 FAQ, for example, Microsoft responded, "It's too early to talk about features of the Internet Explorer 9 Beta" to the query, "Will Internet Explorer 9 run on Windows XP?"
 dialog box
This dialog box pops up during attempts to install IE9 Platform Preview on Windows XP.
That caused some users to demand a straight answer. "Please tell whether the final version will run on Windows XP SP3 or not," said someone identified as "eXPerience" in a comment to a blog post by Dean Hachamovich, Microsoft's general manager for the IE team. "If not, please be clear about it. Really, enough is enough of keeping users in the lurch about Windows XP support."
Others bashed Microsoft on the assumption that IE9 would never run on XP. "Dropping Windows XP support is one of the worst decisions ever taken by [the] IE team, probably even worse than disbanding the IE team back in the IE6 days," claimed an anonymous commenter.
Microsoft had offered up broad hints that IE9 was not in Windows XP's future, however. Tuesday, a company spokeswoman said the new browser needs a "modern operating system," a phrase that hasn't been paired with Window XP for years. "Internet Explorer 9 requires the modern graphics and security underpinnings that have come since 2001," she added, clearly referring to XP, which appeared that year.
Windows XP's inability to run the Platform Preview or the final browser stems from, IE9's graphics hardware acceleration, which relies on the Direct2D and DirectWrite DirectX APIs (applications programming interfaces). Support for those APIs is built into Windows 7, and was added to Vista and Windows Server 2008 last October, but cannot be extended to Windows XP.
Some users worried that by halting browser development for Windows XP, Microsoft would repeat a current problem, getting customers to ditch IE6 for a newer version. "Those who choose to stay with XP will be forced to [then] stay forever on IE8, which will become the new IE6," said a user named Danny Gibbons in a comment on Hachamovich's blog.
Tough, said Sheri McLeish, Forrester Research's browser analyst. "This is the stick to get off XP," she said. Windows XP users will solve the browser problem themselves when they upgrade, as most eventually will, to Windows 7. "What are they going to do, go to Linux or run XP forever?" she asked.
Still, IE9's inability to run on Windows XP will prevent it from becoming widespread until the nearly-nine-year-old OS loses significant share to Windows 7. According to Web metrics company NetApplications' most recent data, if IE9 was released today, it would be able to run on just over a quarter -- 27% -- of all Windows machines.
No other major browser maker has announced plans to stop supporting Windows XP, but several have dropped other operating systems or platforms. Last month, for instance, Mozilla said it would not support Apple's Mac OS X 10.4, known as "Tiger," in future upgrades to Firefox. Google's Chrome for the Mac, meanwhile, only runs on Intel-based Macs, not on the older PowerPC-based machines that were discontinued in 2006.
The IE9 Platform Preview can be downloaded from Microsoft's site. It requires Windows 7, Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 or Windows 2008 R2.

How to test IE9 if you run Windows XP

A couple of weeks ago Microsoft finally released Internet Explorer Application Compatibility VPC Images for IE9.
Because of this, the below procedure is not necessary anymore.
There's one quite strange thing with these images. The Win7+IE8 image is about 2.6GB but the Win7+IE9 is 4.3GB! There's some extra tools in the IE9 one but they certainly do not add up to the 1.7GB size difference. I've had reports of people successfully downloading the Win7+IE8 and then upgrading to IE9. That could be an option if you want to save some download time and disk space.
I'm currently at a company still running Windows XP. Last week Internet Explorer 9 was released and it requires at least Windows Vista. That requirement was a problem because we absolutely had to test our web applications in IE9. Microsoft had released Internet Explorer Application Compatibility VPC Images for earlier versions of IE but not for IE9. At least they still offer a VPC running Vista and that was the path we took to solve our testing problems. If you know of an easier way then please tell!
  • Download and install Virtual PC.
Edit 2011-09-25 It seems Microsoft has changed the download page. You can get Virtual PC 2007 for older versions of Windows here.
  • Download and run/unpack the IE8-VIS VHD.
  • Create a new virtual machine and select the VHD as the harddisk.
  • In the virtual machine then download and install Vista SP2.
  • Finally, obviously still in the VPC, download IE9.
